Four More Years

With a sweeping victory over GOP contender Mitt Romney on Tuesday, Barack Obama joined the rarefied ranks of two-term presidents, becoming only the 17th to be elected twice. His 303 to 206 win granted President Obama four more years to turn the sluggish economy around and get people back on their feet. The slow recovery of his first term, due in part to recalcitrant Republicans in Congress, had many newspapers featuring headlines like "Is Obama Toast?" or "Can He Win?" in the days leading up to the election. But on Tuesday, Obama and his team, from campaign advisers to grassroots volunteers like myself, replied with a resounding YES WE CAN! despite being massively out-raised and outspent by the Romney campaign.

Four years ago, it was the closing of a racial divide. On Tuesday, however, it was the opening of new doors for America. The President's victory illustrated a strong commitment by the American people to the progress that had been made during his first term, and hopefully, this time around, important jobs bills won't be blocked by Senate and House Republicans, and Grover Norquist's "No New Taxes" pledge will fall into oblivion, left dusty and forgotten until a Republican wins the White House again. (A man can dream, can't he?).

Congratulations, Mr. President.
